Any singer, no matter their age, level, or chosen vocal style, has the capability of success. Singing requires patience, vulnerability, passion, and dedication; things anyone is able to achieve. In the voice studio, we combine a healthy foundation of technique with emotional connections to create beautiful singing.
My mission as a voice teacher is to demystify any misconceptions or presumptions about the voice. Because the vocal mechanism can’t be seen, one must rely on the awareness of the body to fully understand one’s voice. This awareness is not just of their voice systems, but of their entire body, from head to toes. I commonly use physical exercises to show singers how their whole body functions to serve the voice. I am cross-trained in classical, musical theatre, and jazz voice, and employ both new methods found in voice science along with traditional bel canto technique in teaching. Singing isn’t a one size fits all approach. Every student gravitates towards different techniques, so I tailor my teaching to fit their learning styles.
While exceptional vocal technique is paramount, it is equally as important to have an emotional understanding of music. In the voice studio, we work to create earnest performances, through explorations of text and emotion-driven vocal and breathing exercises.
It is important to me to provide singers with the tools to become smart musicians. Whether you are a novice or professional, understanding music at a theoretical level will make a more self-sufficient, holistic musician. I make sure to teach my students the fundamentals of music theory, sight-singing, piano, as well as historical contexts of composers and pieces.
After a lesson, I want students to feel nurtured, challenged, and empowered through their voices. I want them to test their vocal limits and surprise themselves with their potential. Progress is one step at a time, and I make sure to celebrate the small vocal victories with my students.
